Robotic surgery with the Da Vinci system

The surgical robot is a tool, not an end in itself. For most procedures it offers no advantage over proven keyhole surgery. In complex cases, however, it can be helpful – and that is where I use it selectively.

What is the Da Vinci system?

The Da Vinci surgical robot is a surgical system for minimally invasive surgery. It does not operate independently: I control every movement from a console and see the surgical field magnified in 3D. Fine, highly mobile instruments make precise work in confined spaces easier.

Does the robot offer an advantage?

In most cases, no. For standard procedures such as inguinal hernia surgery, gallbladder removal or the usual reflux operation, laparoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) is equivalent – with the same small incisions and the same quick recovery. I therefore usually perform these operations laparoscopically.

In complex situations, on the other hand, the Da Vinci system can offer advantages, for example:

  • in complex hernias, for example large incisional hernias or large hiatal hernias, or after previous operations
  • in rectal cancer, where particularly precise work is required in the narrow pelvis

We will discuss together whether a robotic operation makes sense in your case. For medical, organisational and billing reasons, not every operation can be performed with the Da Vinci system.

Experience

The Wiener Privatklinik was the first private hospital in Austria with a Da Vinci system. There, I had the opportunity to perform Austria's first robotic Da Vinci general surgery operation in a private hospital. I am a certified robotic surgeon.

Frequently asked questions

Is surgery with the robot better?

In most cases, no. For standard procedures, laparoscopic surgery is equivalent. The robot can offer advantages in complex cases, such as complex hernias or rectal cancer.

Does the robot operate independently?

No. I control every movement myself from the console.
